Lei Musubi is a pop-up operating in the DC-Maryland-Virginia region that sells rice balls. They’ve amassed quite a following since starting out in 2018!
Anyways, a few weeks ago, Lei Musubi had a popup inside the Toli Moli (which is also an awesome space) in DC’s Union Market. There owner Vivien Bang was making musubi after musubi for hungry customers (her food was so popular that it eventually sold out).
During a lull in the business of the pop-up, I asked her what inspired her to make Lei Musubi. It turns out she was inspired by her childhood memories—of the plateful of rice balls as an after-school snack and of helping her mother host dinner parities. After noting that there weren’t many places selling musubi in the DC area, she decided to make one herself!
So if Lei Musubi is nearby, go there and grab some of their delicious food and support this local business! There’s everything from musubis that use more traditional ingredients like Spam to creative takes that use ingredients like Flamin’ Hot Cheetos! They’ll be out next in Baltimore for the Charm City Night Market event March 30!
